Friday!!
Scrotum

So... The Philadelphia Flower Show opens this weekend.  What's the theme, you ask?  Legends of Ireland!  I'm sure there will be millions of reviews online, but we're going on Monday and I'll try to recap when we get back.

One of the odd perks of my job is access to giveaway books and CDs.  These are usually preview copies, but sometimes co-workers clear out stuff from their own shelves (I've done that too).  There are known locations for these giveaways.  Now, 90% of them are 'meh', but every now and then... Patty Larkin's CD Red=Luck was in the pile.  It's from 2003, so it's either from someone's collection or sent as background on her.  Either way, it's mine now.  A billion years ago, (17?) I went to see Four Bitchin' Babes perform and of them, Patty Larkin just blew me away.  I've always tried to get her stuff, but like Richard Thompson or Joan Armatrading, she exists on the margin of success, under promoted but totally awesome.

Speaking of free stuff, I just finished Legacy by Kerrigan Valentine.  The opening line caught me and I enjoyed the first half quite a bit.  It's an overtly feminist (hey, me too!) dystopia fic about patriarchy gone mad.  Naturally we have a plucky hero who finds her way out of being forced to marry a thug and winds up discovering the other extreme before choosing her own way.  Right.  Well it's a good read and food for thought.  My copy is available to anyone interested, I think it's in bookstores soon.  It's appropriate for teens and up.  There is violence, but the word 'scrotum' is not used anywhere.

Peace

Looks like she has one coming out soon. I'm going to push her here at work. A producer and I have talked about getting her in here for years.

Hey, at the flower show is there any chance that if you find a vendor dealing in ornamental ground cover, could you inquire about a ground cover suitable for planting in the area under a very large Sycamore tree (25 x 30 feet, almost extending out to the drip line) that spreads (rather than needed regular dividing), and is tolerant of phytopthora root rot? No, not kidding. boy do I wish I were. This stuff has devasted the English Ivy that used to cover the area described.

And I wish I could go to the flower show. Have a great time!

Didn't find anyone who knew more than the folks you've talked to already.

We had a great time, though with kids in tow? Maybe not next year!

So I suppose school boys are not permitted to bring their scrotums to school?

By the way, that kangaroo bag does not sound very lucky for the kangaroo.

And wow, that flower show really sneaks up! I suppose one year I will make it back there again.

I went, I went! I got to go yesterday. I enjoyed the faerie (took 4 visits to that section until he was finally there), got lots of good swag, and tried on the real leather wellies. I was also impressed that they turned a men's room into a ladies room. Hooray for the convention people!
I don't think anything will match the OOOOOHHHHHH! of the first one I went to, but all the displays were amazing. The monastary garden was nice. And lots of water features!

Interesting quote from one librarian:

“I don’t think our teachers, or myself, want to do that vocabulary lesson."

Which is why our children learn warped things on the streets--those who they should be able to turn to for accurate information get all squicky at some topics. So not only do the children get grossly misinformed, but they learn that being squicky is the correct way to approach these things, and the cycle never ends.

*sigh*

My mom used to whisper whenever such topics came up. She doesn't any more, but now it's just TMI. :-)

For ground cover, you may want to ask Richard Murray, my favorite arborist of Shannon Tree Service. Of course, knowing him he would likely recommend mulch in the area because anything else would take away nutrition from the tree. :-D

It's just one word in the story, too! We're pretty open with the kids and we name body parts with the real words (biology major in the house) so having a story with the word 'scrotum' in it isn't a cause for freaking out. The character is confused by the word and plays with it. Still no freaking out since we play with words all the time. I think I'm going to have to buy this book just to be contrary.

For all our attempts to use the real words, our son once (maybe at age 4 1/2?) said his tentacles under his peanut were wrinkled. Once I stopped laughing I corrected him and even explained that his testicles were inside his scrotum and that was what was wrinkled. Can't get the future scientists started too early.

Some books are more obvious about their politics and this one is unabashed. I'm used to a more nuanced approached, but it's out there and yet it stays true to the POV's age and understanding. I enjoyed it.

Thanks for the mention about Legacy on your site! The release date is May 18, 2007 and it can be purchased through Amazon and Bookworld (http://www.bookworld.com).

P.S. This most embarrassing indictment of my vocabulary will be addressed in my next book - I will do my best to include the word 'scrotum' as frequently as possible.
